Negative Stereotypes Inaccurate and Harmful

Though there are lots of "doom and gloom" stories about today's teenagers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has statistics that may put trends in adolescent behavior in a better light. According to the CDC, most teens have not had a drink in the past 30 days, few have tried marijuana, and only 50 percent of them have had sex.

"This reality can be leveraged to promote healthy choices through 'social norming'. Social norming operates on the notion that if the general impression is that most kids don't drink alcohol, then those who do drink will drink less, and fewer will start drinking."

Several high schools, middle schools, and colleges have begun using the social norming approach and found it to be very effective in curbing risky behavior. It's a strategy parents can use as well by talking to their teens about what everyone is not doing. Source: San Marcos Daily Record

College Students Flock to Courses in Philosophy

Philosophy is now the "hot" major for college students.

Enrollments in philosophy departments have more than doubled over the past two years at schools like Reuters, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, University of Pittsburgh, and City University of New York.

David Schrader, director of the American Philosophical Association, noted that demand for courses is outpacing resources at some colleges. "Philosophy is a major that helps students become quick learners," he said, "and gives them strong skills in writing, analysis and critical thinking."

One student noted another added benefit of majoring in philosophy: "The whole deep existential torment thing - it's good for getting girls."

Most adults don't know what kind of music their teens are listening to. This article from OnMilwaukee.com delves into the world of popular teen music, surveying high school students to find out what they do and don't love. Their answers may surprise you.

"You might be surprised to find out just how many teenagers love the rock 'n' roll tunes of the '60s, '70s and '80s that mom and dad were rockin' to decades ago. Jake, 16, says that the loves classic rock because it's the foundation for all today's new breeds of rock."
