"Any teen who really - and I mean really - wanted $325 spectacles [or a Sony Playstation] ought to be able to pay half. I make the same proposition regarding school-age children who want to start wearing contact lenses. One of the most predictable indicators of personal responsibility is financial commitment. A child who has invested their own money towards the purchase of contact lenses will take very good care of them - not so if merely given them."Challenge your teen to find the clothes, glasses, or cell phone she wants online, at a discount. Most web-savvy teens can do that. The requirement to pay half still stands, but you'll both be paying half of less. Source: WebMD

"In a 2006 poll by the National Sleep Foundation, 97 percent of teens said they have at least one electronic item, such as a TV, computer, phone or music device in their rooms. On average, sixth-graders reported having more than two gadgets in their room, while high-school seniors said they had four. In the survey, teens with four or more devices in their bedrooms were more likely to get insufficient sleep."When Chris and Patti Calawerts realized that technology was interfering with their daughter Stephanie's sleep, they took action. The cell phone went off at 9p.m. and both the TV and computer were removed from her room. Though she protested at first, she now says she's glad to no longer feel "dependent on technology." "While, for the most part, tween shows are the domain of children and children only, don't be so sure there isn't something in some of these shows for the parents as well."For sake of spending time with kids, some of these tween shows are worth checking out. Though their target audience is the pre-teen crowd, many of the shows have positive messages and are entertaining enough for child and parent to watch together.

"As parents we need to understand that our teens want us to be grown up. This can be incredibly easy for us to miss or forget... They want us to be the people who know what's going on. They want us to be in charge. They want us to provide the security, the rules, the guidance, and the lookout."Instead of trying to be the "cool" parent, be the parent your kids know they can count on. If they know they can come to you and depend on you when they have questions or - heaven forbid - a crisis, they will. Read more at TimesSentinel.com.
