Parenting Classes Scheduled in Joliet, Illinois

Two separate parenting classes are set to begin at Guardian Angel Community Services in Joliet, Illinois.

The first is an eight-week class on positive parenting that will teach effective communication skills and positive reinforcement.
The second is a six-week course for parents of adolescents. This course will help parents use positive communication to redirect their teens' behavior.

Positive and Practical Parenting

Since Aug. 7, residents in and around Petersburg, Va., have been able to participate in an eight-week program titled "Positive and Practical Parenting." The weekly, two-hour sessions are open to parents, grandparents, childcare providers, and anyone else who to learn more about how to be a better parent.

"Information focuses on pre-school children, primary, elementary school-aged children and teens. Certificates are awarded to participants who complete the entire 8-week session... There is no cost to participate."

The program is sponsored by the Virginia Cooperative Extension-Petersburg Office and Petersburg Department of Social Services. College Students Flock to Courses in Philosophy

Philosophy is now the "hot" major for college students.

Enrollments in philosophy departments have more than doubled over the past two years at schools like Reuters, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, University of Pittsburgh, and City University of New York.

David Schrader, director of the American Philosophical Association, noted that demand for courses is outpacing resources at some colleges. "Philosophy is a major that helps students become quick learners," he said, "and gives them strong skills in writing, analysis and critical thinking."

One student noted another added benefit of majoring in philosophy: "The whole deep existential torment thing - it's good for getting girls."
