Strategies for Raising Happy, Successful Children

The instruction manual parents have been looking for may have finally arrived. At least, that's how Stephanie Ferguson, Adolescence Editor for BellaOnline, feels about a new book by Dr. Sylvia Rimm.

Bridging Societal Challenges

Times may change, but some of the basics of parenting remain the same. So says Mary Muscari, Associate Professor at Binghamton University, who's co-authored two new books for parents of teenagers.

"'The good, old-fashioned family meal that we've long forgotten about is so critical,' she said. 'If you can't do it at night because kids are overscheduled, do it at breakfast. Have some time when people can sit down and share and connect.'"

Time with parents means kids are more likely to talk when they're confused or in trouble. Parenting the Net Generation

Today's generation of kids and adolescents lives in a very different world than did their parents. They prefer multi-tasking and would rather be online that outside. In his new book, "Me, MySpace and I: Parenting the Net Generation", CSU psychology professor Larry Rosen attempts to shed some light and ease some fears.

"'It's a different world now, and parents have to get used to it,' the author said in an interview. 'Kids' social life is online, now and you can't take that away from them – you have to manage it.' The book offers parents a way to do just that with simple tips such as placing computers in a common area, setting limits for time spent online and using sites like MySpace and Facebook themselves to glean a clearer understanding of what kids experience."

Rosen believes kids' online presence is a great way for them to develop their own identity, as it allows them to express themselves in a lower risk environment.

Despite the Harry Potter Craze Teens are Reading Less

Teens are reading less, which may be why their scores in reading are falling, according to a new report from the National Endowment of the Arts.

The number of 17-year-olds who "never or hardly ever" read for pleasure is now at 19%, or double the percent ten years before. Only 52% of college-aged Americans read one book for pleasure, compared to 59% in 1992.

Publishers told researchers from the NEA that the teen market for books is hotter than ever, despite the decline in reading. This may be due to the Harry Potter books, which adults buy for themselves, or to the fact that a small number of teens buy a large number of books.

Overall book sales have dropped 14% between 1985 and 2005.

Teens Reading More

Teens are buying more books, according to analysts in the publishing industry. Sales are up 25% since 1999, with the Harry Potter and Lemony Snickett series and the Manga graphic novels among the most popular.
