For most parents, the first 18 years of a child’s life are filled with first-time accomplishments, lots of surprises and repeated sacrifices. You do the best you can to raise kids that are confident, smart, and independent.
Then comes graduation day, and suddenly the idea of an independent child doesn’t sound as appealing.
“To those of you who have a high school senior this year: I know that ‘letting go’ of your son or daughter after graduation will be a difficult, even heart-wrenching process... The choices before them will be vast and very often incomprehensible. As parents, we want reassurance that we’ve prepared our children for this.” [Source: The Huffington Post]
The reassurance we seek will come as we watch our children navigate the tricky waters of adulthood. We won’t be front-and-center anymore, but we can still be involved – offering guidance, support, and sometimes a much-needed shoulder to cry on. Our parental roles will be different, but we’re still parents.
