Instant messaging is not ruining our children's spelling ability. In fact, it might actually be helping it. Its having them think about language in different ways, Dr. Connie Varnhagen, author of the study, said in a Sept. 23 Canadian Press article.
Dr. Varnhagen studied instant messages from students ages 12 to 17 years old over the course of one week, and then gave them a spelling test. The ones who could spell well in formal English were also good at spelling chatspeak, she discovered.
