- Researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy at the Research Institute at Nationwide Childrens Hospital used data from emergency rooms throughout the United States.
- The number of injuries incurred in gym classes doubled between 1997 and 2007.
- However, in 1991, over 40 percent of students had daily physical education classes, but by 2003, only 28 percent had such classes.
Gender differences were also noted in the injuries that were studied. Boys were more likely to have head injuries, fractures or cuts, and girls were more likely to have strains, sprains and non-contact injuries.
