So, what do I mean by respect? Make your teen feel important. Build [your teen] up. Find something that you can say to encourage him or her. Have fun. Encourage. Be vulnerable. Model that you, as a parent, are not always right& And remember: Nurture the relationship. This advice doesnt mean that you and your teenager are equals. Youre still the parent and youre still responsible for making decisions, setting boundaries and enforcing rules -- responsibilities that can be quite difficult when dealing with an oppositional or defiant teenager.
But even when your teen is testing your limits and challenging your authority, model proper behavior by giving the same basic respect that youd like to receive.
