However, the SAMHSA study indicates that only 39 percent of depressed teens received treatment for their depression. In addition, the vast majority (80 percent) of teens who need treatment for substance abuse are not getting the help they need.
A major depressive episode is defined as lasting for at least two weeks, and includes symptoms such as losing pleasure or interest in life, and having problems with sleeping, eating, energy levels, self-image, and concentration.
Much more than "teen moodiness" or just a typical teen phase, teen depression is a serious and potentially life-altering condition that has been associated with issues including (but not limited to) teen suicide, teen substance abuse, and teen behavior problems.
