Over 85% of the 5,665 high school students in the survey said their friends were experienced drivers, even though "everyone they are driving with is virtually inexperienced," said lead researcher Dr. Kenneth R. Ginsburg.
Although having passengers in the car or using cell phones while driving increase the chance of an accident, very few teens in the survey recognized these dangers. Two-thirds said they usually travel with others in the car and a majority thought it was okay to talk on the phone while driving. This study appears in Pediatrics.
