Getting Back to the Basics

When Marlene Hoefler was in school, she remembers teachers who were attentive to students' needs, and parents who were involved in her academics and her life in general. Today, however, she finds that's more the exception than the rule, and she urges both parents and educators to 'get back to the basics' of teaching and parenting.

"More parents need to get involved with the schools and in their children's lives and know what the schools are doing and speak up. Encourage children and give them morals and values to live by. Teach them to be respectful."

Though it's tempting to try and be a child's friend, parents need to be parents, mentoring and guiding their kids, and helping them develop into healthy adults.

said...: Being a teacher of middle school students and a single parent of boys (13 and 17), I too find the need to be more involved in my son's school. What's the cliche though..."a cobbler's family wears no shoes"... it's hard to make time to talk with my kid's teachers! But, I still do it.On a different note, I've noticed that parents will say, "I've tried EVERYTHING and he is STILL ______!" (fill in the blank) I'm frustrated by this, because it's obvious that they haven't tried everything. They have tried SOME things and then given up when it didn't solve the problem. I think there is no such thing as something that will work everytime. By the time of pre-teen, I believe we need to open the eyes of our children instead of opening them for them.; 9:10 PM
