Tips for "Latchkey Kids"
For parents who are away from home in the afternoon hours when their children are done with school, they often worry about leaving their kids home alone. First, elementary school age kids - under the age of ten - should never be left alone. They're just too young developmentally to care for themselves, especially in an emergency.
If your kids are old enough and mature enough to be left alone after school, then they need to be taught how to handle emergencies. Make sure a list of all important phone numbers is kept by the phone. Be sure your child's safety is always a priority.
